Folk art is fundamentally based on the cultural and traditional heritage of previous generations. Traditional applied art cannot exist without relying on the cultural heritage of society. The article is devoted to the philosophical understanding of the phenomenon of folk art. Folk art, which originated in the Paleolithic period and is based on the artistic tradition of the ethnic group, continues to exist in some industrialised countries, including Russia. The author concludes that folk art of the world and Russia has passed a contradictory path. Having generated the “great” art of the classical type, folk art has moved down to the level of subsidiary crafts, and in some countries – to kitsch. However, in the modern conditions of globalisation and the “return of ethnicity,” folk art takes on new features.
